There are numerous different dental procedures and treatments that may require the patient to be sedated. While this brings up feelings of anxiety and fear for many, sedation dentistry is extremely safe and allows us to provide you with the care and treatment you need – pain-free. Dr. Ron Katyal and our Premier Smiles team believes in giving our patients the option of sedation for their dental treatment, such as root canal therapy or tooth extraction. In order to eliminate the fears you may have surrounding the idea of being “put under”, we strive to educate our patients and answer any questions they may have honestly. One of the things that sets Dr. Katyal apart from other Dallas dentists is that he will never recommend anything he wouldn’t to his own family. Our Dental hygienists and entire team strive to ensure each and every patient who walks through our doors feels comfortable and fully understands the treatment they are scheduled to receive.
Sedation is most commonly used during more extensive dental procedures, or when patients are experiencing dental fear and anxiety. Sedation dentistry is considered an effective way to make patients feel comfortable during their visit. However, it is imperative that you discuss any concerns you have and inform Dr. Katyal about any medications or medical treatments you are receiving before being sedated. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, Dr. Katyal will go over the process with you as well as both pre- and post-sedation instructions. With more than 15 years of experience in family and cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Katyal is an expert at sedation dentistry and will do everything he can to answer your questions and make sure you are comfortable with the process before we begin.
Types of Sedation
- Oral Conscious Sedation – This type of sedation is administered orally and brings patients to
a relaxed state of consciousness with the intention of decreasing any pain and discomfort.
Patients who receive oral conscious sedation are able to communicate and respond to ques
tions throughout the procedure.
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation – Also referred to as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide sedation is another
conscious sedative that has a calming effect and is particularly helpful for patients who are
anxious or fearful of going to the dentist. This form of sedation is a mixture of oxygen and
gas and wears off almost immediately after treatment.
- IV Sedation – Sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight dentistry”, IV sedation
is when a patient is administered sedatives directly into the bloodstream. This is the sedative
of choice for patients who have dental phobia, as it will calm them almost immediately.
There are numerous advantages to sedation while receiving dental treatment at Premier Smiles. Not only will your treatment be completed while you are in a more relaxed state of mind, but you will experience less discomfort following the treatment and we may be able to perform several different restorations or treatments while you are sedated.
